Model Projects of Peringammala Grama Panchayat – Biodiversity Conservation

1. Preparation and Updating of the People's Biodiversity Register (PBR)

The Panchayat documents and preserves local flora, fauna, water resources, and traditional knowledge through the preparation and periodic updating of the People's Biodiversity Register (PBR).

2. Activities of the Biodiversity Management Committee (BMC)

The Biodiversity Management Committee undertakes various programs aimed at conserving rare plant and animal species and promoting environmental awareness among the local community.

3. Conservation of Springs and Water Resources

Special initiatives are implemented for the protection and rejuvenation of natural springs, streams, ponds, and other water bodies originating from the surrounding hill ranges.

4. Medicinal Plant Gardens

Medicinal plant gardens have been established in schools and public institutions to conserve and promote traditional medicinal plants and indigenous knowledge.

5. Tree Plantation Programmes

Native tree species are planted in public spaces and areas adjoining forest regions to enhance green cover and support local ecosystems.

6. Bird and Wildlife Conservation Awareness

Awareness classes, camps, and educational programmes are organized for students and the general public to highlight the importance of biodiversity and wildlife conservation.

7. Collaborative Activities with Haritha Keralam Mission

Environment-friendly projects integrating waste management, water conservation, and sustainable agricultural development are implemented in collaboration with the Haritha Keralam Mission.

8. Conservation of Traditional Agricultural Diversity

The Panchayat promotes and conserves indigenous varieties of paddy, tuber crops, fruit trees, and other traditional agricultural resources.

9. Conservation Initiatives Related to the Ponmudi–Agasthyamala Eco-region

As part of the Western Ghats ecosystem, the Panchayat undertakes measures to protect natural resources and maintain ecological balance in the Ponmudi–Agasthyamala landscape.
